Industrializing infrastructure
The applications and websites developed and maintained by Emencia on behalf of its clients were deployed on disparate servers hosted by various providers. This strategy had initially been driven by hosting cost optimization, taking advantage of these providers’ highly competitive per-unit server rental offers.
Over time, however, the heterogeneity of the hardware configurations and network environments of these servers created both operational and economic drawbacks:
- Increased maintenance complexity and limited architectural options
- No economies of scale on infrastructure costs, along with underutilized resources
For these reasons, Emencia wanted to bring in Enix to help redefine its hosting strategy, rationalize its infrastructure, and manage the transition without impacting its own business or that of its clients.
Emencia
IT Consulting & Open Source Engineering since 2002.
For 18 years, Emencia’s consultants have worked across every phase of a project: architecture, project management, design & development, administration, and application deployment.
Depending on the need and the level of commitment to results, Emencia offers adaptable engagement models: consulting mode or “service center”, turnkey projects, and more.
At every stage, Emencia brings its expertise, agility, and responsiveness to deliver solutions matched to client expectations.
“Thanks to the deployment on Enix’s private cloud, we cut our costs and moved to a high-availability architecture. We can now focus on our core business with complete peace of mind!”
Roger Fernandez, CEO of EmenciaEnix's support and solutions
Enix proposed and implemented, within its datacenter infrastructure, a private cloud dedicated to Emencia:Audit and architecture
To consolidate Emencia’s heterogeneous infrastructure, Enix proposed consolidating the existing physical servers and virtual machines by integrating them into a dedicated Proxmox VE cluster, an open-source virtualization solution. In addition to the benefits of resource pooling, our virtualization solution delivers high availability and easier maintenance that the use of isolated servers could not provide.Deployment on Enix infrastructure
To enable a seamless transition with data synchronization between physical servers and near real-time redirection of incoming traffic to their virtualized version, we set up secure VPN connections from all the physical servers to the Enix virtualization cluster.
The old physical servers gradually became simple relay servers, redirecting incoming connections to the new virtual machines through these VPN tunnels.
The VPN tunnels were then removed on a case-by-case basis, once traffic was redirected directly to the new servers by simply updating the IP addresses in the DNS zone configurations of Emencia’s clients’ domain names.
Managed services
Since this migration, Enix has been managing Emencia’s infrastructure on a daily basis and ensures full availability of services. We also keep the solution up to date to guarantee data security and integrity.
The migration of all websites and applications was carried out within a single week, during business hours, and seamlessly for all of Emencia’s clients.
By migrating its clients’ websites and applications to its new private cloud at Enix and using virtualization, Emencia was also able to cut resource usage by a factor of 4 while gaining in availability. They also benefit from simplified capacity planning for onboarding new clients, as well as Enix’s expertise for the future evolution of their infrastructure.
